The Belmont Buddy Lite Blood/Fluid Warmer
The Belmont Buddy Lite from Belmont Instrument Corp. was designed to facilitate rapid casualty evacuation. The Belmont Buddy Lite bIood/fluid warmer is a compact battery-powered, near patient dry heat fluid warmer, which was developed based on feedback from the U.S. Military Special Operations healthcare team. The device helps transfer an injured soldier quickly to the hospital while preventing hypothermia and treating blood loss.
In 2010, the Department of Defense awarded Belmont Instrument Corporation of Billerica, MA a large contract for its blood/fluid warming technology line of products. They are used across all branches of the armed services – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, as well as by federal civilian agencies.
The Belmont Buddy Lite weighs 1.6 lbs. and offers safety features including a large air-venting membrane and flow control valves to prevent air entrainment and excessive line pressure. This compact system is designed for automated temperature regulation and automated priming. The battery technology is capable of warming 4.4 liters of fluid on a single charge.
The Belmont Buddy Lite is now widely used by EMTs globally, for pre-hospital care and patient transport by ambulance or helicopter. It is also used in hospitals globally, in several departments, including ER and pediatrics due to its unique ability to help prevent air embolism. The small disposable can remain in line at the end of the procedure allowing for easy transport.
