Low-Cost Bili Lights
Jaundice, caused by high blood levels of bilirubin, is common in newborn infants. Babies with moderate to severe jaundice are typically treated using phototherapy to help breakdown bilirubin.
A recent Tulane graduate Angela Czesak came up with the idea of a low-cost bili light device after visiting Tanzania in 2011 and visiting a hospital, which only possessed a single bili light.
Czesak decided to create a portable low-cost device that could help such cash-strapped hospitals treat more jaundiced neonates. She went shopping for parts, including blue LEDs used to decorate motorcycles and a shower curtain, and developed a custom stand. The device, which could be used for three infants simultaneously, had a price tag just over $100.
