A cast part in medical device manufacturing is created by pouring liquefied material into a mold and allowing it to solidify. Castings can be made from metals, or from resins or expoxys that are considered cold setting, requiring time to cure after mixing two or more components together. As opposed to wrought metal products, where a plate or bar is rolled or stretched in one direction, the microstructure of cast products doesn’t have a directional bias, and this more uniform grain structure allows insulation, chilling, or heat treatments to greater influence the properties in a finished product.
The casting process in medical device manufacturing is very complex, as it often involves multiple cavity molds with complex gating and venting, shrink calculations, and specific cooling curves to achieve the correct sizes and properties in the finished part.
