Though there are thousands of off-the-shelf grades of materials used in medical device manufacturing, many applications need the benefits of several different materials, wrapped up into one uniform repeatable material, which can be achieved through compounding. Medical device contract manufacturers offering compounding services use equipment to carefully weigh out additives including silver, carbon, and different plastics, and mix them into one material, ensuring that the final product is consistent from batch to batch. Some compounders offer other contract manufacturing services, like product molding, where others supply just the material to another processor.
Long fiber reinforcement may be necessary to increase the strength of a product, or additives that increase antimicrobial properties, flame retardants, x-ray shielding, conductive compounds, or nano-engineered molecules offer a variety of functional properties. The look and feel of a device is becoming increasingly important, so the color, texture, and surface finish of a device’s housing may require specialty compounds to achieve the desired effect.
