Converting combines or alters raw materials to make new products, whether it is applying adhesives to tapes, laminating, slitting or reducing the size of film sheets, or die cutting specific shapes out of rollstock, to name a few. Typical materials converted in medical device manufacturing include rubbers and plastics, foils and soft metals, films and papers, screens and meshes, magnetic or conductive materials, or composites. Gaskets, labels, and RFI shielding components are often customized through converting for use in a specific medical device, and items such as bandages and transdermal patches may also require exact specifications for use with devices or drug delivery systems.
For products made from sheet materials, press unwinds and rewinds may be needed to achieve the correct layers, and roll handling equipment is often necessary. Stretching, splicing, trimming, coating and static control processes are often part of the converting process. Converting services are often combined with printing or packaging needs, using printing, bagging, and boxing equipment to complete the final product.
