Medical device contract manufacturers offering dipping services use automatic and manual systems to dip portions of components into plastic-like materials, adding to the appearance and function of the device. The ends of handles, tubes, and shipping containers can be dipped to protect or seal the contents. Grips on handheld devices or tools are also dipped to add comfort or ergonomic functionality. Dipping can also add plugs to components, covering or filling holes before other finishing steps like powder coating or painting. Dipped covers are also used on electrical devices.
Latex, neoprene, PVC, and urethanes can be used, but most common is Plastisol, a polymer vinyl compound which is in a liquid state at ambient temperatures and permanently fuses into a rubber-like solid material when heated to a certain point. Dipping options include a wide range of hardnesses, textures, and colors, with multiple layers often required to achieve the desired thickness.
