In an effort to minimize contamination, many medical devices are moving towards disposables, such as fluid transfer sets, bags, or containers, and drug delivery devices requiring filling services. Since sterilization is a critical step, contract manufacturers must have the proper class 100 or better cleanroom environment and equipment. Aseptic filling, where fluid is transferred from one container to another in order to prevent potential contamination without the use of terminal sterilization, eliminates the need for post sterilization. Terminal filling, a process that has added production time and cost, requires that containers are autoclaved after they are filled.
