While some medical devices require contract manufacturers to machine a component out of a solid block of material, forming equipment can be used to bend, cut, or alter sheets, rods, pipes, or other shapes of materials used in device manufacturing. A variety of manual, hydraulic, and programmable automated equipment is used for various types of forming in medical device manufacturing. Brakes are used to create angles, curves, and special bends in sheet metal, and rolls can bend sheets, with slip rolls used for thinner gauge material, and plate rolls bending thicker materials. Benders form tubes, pipes, and rolls, with computer numerical control (CNC) options on bending equipment like press brakes and mandrel benders. Other forming equipment used by medical device contract manufacturers includes bandsaws, cold saws, notchers, bevellers, and pneumatic or electric tapping arms. Contract manufacturers may also perform several forming functions in machines called ironworkers, which combine notching, punching, braking, shearing and gauging capabilities.
