Grinding uses a spinning abrasive grinding wheel to shape components in medical device manufacturing. Abrasive particles on a grinding wheel are used to remove particles from a workpiece, but the heat created in the process often requires a coolant to keep the material within tolerance.
Among the equipment used for grinding are belt grinders, often used to deburr and finish, bench grinders, which have wheels fixed to the workbench with different abrasive finishes, and jig grinders, used to create holes, pins, and finish surface grinding, Cylindrical grinders use multiple wheels to make rods, and surface grinders hold the workpiece with a magnetic table and lower the grinding wheel, which is controlled manually or by computer numerical control (CNC) commands. Tight tolerances are often required, including nanometer-level finishes, which can be achieved with CNC control removing so little material with each pass that coolants aren’t necessary.
