Radio frequency (RF) heat sealing, also referred to as dielectric sealing, RF welding, or high frequency welding, is a process completed by contract manufacturers used to seal together sheets of material in medical device manufacturing. Radio waves have a frequency that excites polar molecules, so creating electromagnetic energy results in heat and material bonding. Similar to microwave ovens but not enclosed, RF heat sealing equipment uses a die to press down on the portions of the sheet needing to be sealed, and a buffer is needed beneath the material to diffuse the created energy and prevent burns or weaknesses in the seal. Radio frequency energy heats and cools down quicker than other heat sealing methods, resulting in shorter cycle times. IV bags and medical packaging are items frequently using RF heat sealing, and common materials used include vinyl (PVC), urethane, nylons, styrenes, PETG, and polyolefins with EVA.
