When working with sheets of metal, plastic, or other materials like adhesive-backed fabric, medical device manufacturers utilize the skills of contract manufacturers for hole punching or cutting, typically using punch machines or laser equipment to cut precise shapes through the workpiece material. While hole punching can be performed in manual presses, for large scale production, it is more common to use a computer numerical control (CNC) punch machine, which generally has up to 60 tools rotated like a turret to position the correct punch shape to the workpiece at a rate as fast as 600 strokes per minute. The punch and die are made from hardened steel in a variety of shapes ranging from hexagons, squares, or circles, and the punch is just slightly smaller than the die. For larger, complex shapes, one punch shape can be used repeatedly to cut around the perimeter. Laser cutting offers a greater flexibility in the complexity of shapes it is capable of cutting, but can require more time or energy, and therefore increased production costs, versus using CNC punches.
