Whether lamination is needed for actual medical device components or the packaging in which they are sealed prior to use, contract manufacturers often perform laminating services for medical device manufacturers. Laminating can help make a component waterproof or tearproof, can coat boxes and containers with a UV coating, and can even coat elements used in implantable medical devices. The process can involve multiple substrates and layers, and can encapsulate a variety of materials including paper, metal, plastic, wood, and foam. As far as packaging, laminating is generally performed on a pouch laminating machine, where a heat-activated film lines a pouch that adheres to the item being laminated as it is put through heated rollers with pressure applied to it, or roll laminating machines, which apply film or foil to flat objects. Laminate film generally falls under the categories of standard thermal, low-temperature thermal, heatset, pressure-sensitive, or liquid laminates. In terms of electrical engineering, lamination is used in components like magnetic cores of transformers to reduce heating effects of eddy currents.
