Machining ceramic materials for medical devices involves many of the same processes used to machine metal or plastic materials. Ceramics, used in medical devices and semiconductors for their physical properties including electrical and corrosion resistance and high dialectric strength, are classified in three categories: oxides, including alumina and zirconia; non-oxides, such as silicides, nitrides, carbides, or borides; and composites, which combine oxides and non-oxides with reinforced particulates. Turning, grinding, drilling, and threading processes are performed on ceramics, as well as surface polishing and ultrasonic core drilling. Ceramics can be machined in their unsintered, “green” state, and electrical discharge machining (EDM) equipment can work with electrically conductive ceramics.
