When medical device contract manufacturers need to machine materials or medical device parts that can’t be done with more traditional drilling, grinding, or electrical discharge methods, laser machining can cut metal or refractory materials by melting and vaporizing material using a laser beam. Laser machining medical devices requires a great deal of energy, but doesn’t wear out a cutting blade, and can reduce the chance of warpage since there is a smaller heat-affected zone in the workpiece. Depending on the material and the type of machining needed, there are different types of lasers using different power sources, gas types, and gas flow. The three most common lasers use carbon dioxide (CO2), neodymium (Nd), and neodymium yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd-YAG) gasses. Athermal laser machining systems use short pulses of the laser, which doesn’t generate heat, so the process can be used on exotic materials such as bioabsorbable polymers or shape memory alloys.
