Medical device contract manufacturers face different challenges when machining plastics, which come in a variety of thicknesses, strengths, melting points, and stress resistance. In order to machine plastics for use in medical devices, extra care is needed to prevent parts from cracking or splitting. In general, most of the same equipment used for machining metals can be used on plastics, with both manual and computer numerical controlled (CNC) machine options. Many stock shapes are stress relieved to maintain dimensional stability and ease of machinability, but the thermal expansion is up to 10 times greater in plastics than metals, so adjustments may need to be made to the speed, cutting tool material, and cutting angle.
Drilling plastics requires the cutting tools to be frequently pulled out to allow the ground material, called swarf, to come out of the hole, preventing unwanted abrasion and damage to the part. Turning plastics operations work best with carbide blades, as is threading operations, which also work best with the use of coolant. Most plastic machining doesn’t require coolant use, and amorphous plastics such as polycarbonate, polysulfone, or acrylic may develop stress cracking issues when using petroleum-based cutting fluids.
