Medical device manufacturers looking to create certain types of plastic parts with lower costs than injection molding may turn to contract manufacturers to perform pressure forming. In the pressure forming process, a heated sheet of plastic is applied against a mold, usually concave or “female,” and pressurized air is applied to the plastic sheet side, pushing it against the details of the mold. Since the pressures involved in pressure forming are up to five times greater than pressures used in the similar vacuum forming process, pressure forming is able to achieve greater detail, sharp corners, and even undercuts in the part. Pressure forming molds can be produced at a cost less than those used for injection molding, but generally aren’t as durable, so are ideal for shorter production runs.
