Sealing processes are most frequently used by contract manufacturers for packaging applications in medical device manufacturing, and numerous sealing methods and machinery are available to specific packaging needs. Types of sealing used in medical device manufacturing include radio frequency (RF) sealing, which uses radio waves to excite molecules to heat and fuse plastic, and band sealing, which carries bags either horizontal or vertical by conveyor belt through heated sealing blocks and cooling blocks, sealing the open end. Hot air sealing is a non-contact sealing method that uses a heat manifold to blow a stream of hot air to both sides of the bag. Rotary sealers heat bags with a series of heat bars and pass it through rotary compression wheels to complete the sealing. In thermal impulse welding, a current passes through a wire to rapidly transfer heat to the materials being sealed.
