Medical device manufacturers will frequently need large coils of material cut down in to a number of narrower, smaller coils, and contract manufacturers performing slitting operations use blades or shearing processes to produce the desired widths. Slitting machinery consists of an uncoiler, splitter, and recoiler, with blades being used to cut soft materials including paper, plastics, fabrics, tape, foam, or rubber, and a modified shearing process used to cut hard materials like sheet metal. In this process, two rolls with matching ribs and grooves can cut large rolls into smaller ones, but the edges can have rough edges, also called burrs, which can require a secondary deburring step.
