For manufacturing high-volume containers, trays, and other devices from plastic, medical device manufacturers often seek out contract manufacturers with thermoforming capabilities. The thermoforming process is considered a more complex version of vacuum forming, often combining the initial extrusion of the plastic sheet with the forming of the part, and the trimming, lip rolling, and other finishing steps in a continuous high-speed manufacturing line. The plastic sheet or film is heated, and a vacuum is applied to the form station with a mating mold, with plug-assists aiding in taller parts. Reverse air helps release the parts after molding, and dies or CNC routers trim the parts from the sheet. The thermoforming process is usually categorized into either thin gauge (sheet thickness of less than 1.5 mm), for rigid or semi-rigid packaging, or thick gauge (sheets thicker than 3 mm).
