Tipping operations performed on medical device components, including catheter tipping, help the ease of use and comfort on devices, so contract manufacturers are often asked to perform tipping procedures to complete the devices. Closed tips, irregular 3D shapes, swaged ends, mushrooms, balloon ends, and calibrated through-holes are types of tipping required for devices like endotracheal tubes, nasal oxygen sets, suction connecting tubes, and catheters of all types. Tipping is often done on the actual tubing, but tipping tools and dies can also be used to create a separate component that fits on the end of tubing. For catheter tipping, the tubing is generally pressed into a heated mold while a wire is inserted into the tube to prevent blockage. Torches or batch furnaces can be used in catheter tipping, but induction heating is flameless, clean heat often mandatory for producing sterile catheters.
