For contract manufacturers performing turning operations for medical device manufacturing, instead of using a spinning cutting tool or grinding wheel, turning spins the cylindrical workpiece, often with a lathe, and a cutting blade scrapes away the unwanted material. Turning is often the term used for carving away the outside, while inside diameter modification is often referred to as boring. Computer numerical control (CNC) on lathes allows for tight tolerances in parts, often involving a roughing phase and a more exact finishing phase. Processes for turning include straight turning, taper turning, where the cutting blade distance from the workpiece center changes, or facing, which modifies the end of the workpiece. External grooving and threading creates ridges, often used to connect or screw on another component.
