In the electron beam welding process, contract manufacturers join parts together made of stainless steels, alloys, and even dissimilar metals for medical device manufacturing. Similar to laser welding, electron beam welding, also called e-beam welding, uses a focused beam of electrons (as opposed to photons in lasers) to heat metal to a very hot temperature, instantly vaporizing it and joining it either with or without a filler metal, with minimal distortion affects to the surrounding material. Electron beam welding is often performed in a vacuum to prevent dispersion of the electron beam, and the diameter of the beam can be adjusted by moving the focal point above the surface to widen the weld, or below the surface to increase penetration. The electron beam gun produces and accelerates electrons using a tungsten hot cathode emitter, and passes them through a hollow anode at about half the speed of light. Depending on the method and distance between the welding gun and workpiece, material as thick as 6 inches can be welded, though nonvacuum electron beam welding maximum thickness capabilities are generally 2 inches.
