High-frequency (HF), alternating current resistance welding is a process completed by contract manufacturers to weld tubes or other components for medical device manufacturing. Unlike direct current (DC) or low-frequency alternating current, HF currents flow along surfaces, and the surfaces are squeezed together after melting, producing a quality weld with the potentially detrimental molten metal squeezed out. Either an induction coil is used to supply the current to the workpiece (high-frequency induction welding, or HFIW), or electrical contacts are used in high-frequency resistance welding (HFRW). Metals including carbon and stainless steels, copper, brass, aluminum and titanium are used in high-frequency welding, along with plastic sheet or tubing.
