Laser welding operations are performed by contract manufacturers in medical device manufacturing, whether the laser welding involves using millisecond-long laser pulses to join tiny blades or high-powered gas lasers for high volume applications. Similar to the electron beam welding process, in laser welding high power density is used to weld a variety of metals including stainless and carbon steels, titanium, and aluminum, with small heat-affected zones and a high-quality weld. Laser welding uses a solid state or gas mixture as a medium, and excites it to emit photons, forming a laser beam. Solid state lasers most commonly use a single crystal shaped as a rod made of yttrium aluminum garnet doped with neodymium (Nd:YAG), but can also use neodymium in glass (ND:glass) or synthetic ruby and chromium in aluminum oxide. Fiber optics are used to deliver the laser beam to the weld area. Gas lasers use mixtures of gases like carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or helium, and to excite the gas, high-voltage, low-current power is needed. A rigid lens and mirror are used to deliver the laser beam since fiber optic cable is destroyed by the wavelength created.
