Ultrasonic welding is a way for contract manufacturers to quickly join components without using adhesives, ranging from delicate metal circuits and sterile garments to injection molded thermoplastic parts used in medical device manufacturing. Ideal for medical applications, ultrasonic welding can be automated in a cleanroom, and it will not introduce contaminants or interfere with biocompatibility. In the ultrasonic welding process, a press holds the parts to be assembled together, and a nest or anvil directs high frequency vibration from the ultrasonic stack to the parts, causing melting due to the absorption of vibration energy. A power supply delivers a high-power AC signal to the converter or piezoelectric transducer (which turns an electrical signal into a mechanical vibration), the booster (which modifies the amplitude of the vibration) and the horn or sonotrode (used to apply the mechanical vibration to the parts), which are all tuned to resonate at the exact same ultrasonic frequency, which is typically 20, 30, 35, or 40 kHz. Ultrasonic welding can be performed on both hard and soft plastics, rigid or film pars, fibers, and some metals (generally thin, malleable metals like aluminum, nickel, or copper).
