In the wireforming process, contract manufacturers form rolls of material into rings, pins, hooks, springs and other components used in medical device manufacturing. Manual and computer numeric control (CNC) benders, straighteners, cutters, lathes, cold heaters, and marking presses are among the equipment frequently used for wireforming. A variety of alloys, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and plastic can be used in wireforming, and many other secondary operations are often performed by the contract manufacturer to complete components. Bending uses manual or automated pneumatic or servo driven bend tools to manipulate wire into a specific shape. Swaging is used to reduce the diameter of a wire by forcing it through a set of machined dies, working it into the desired shape, and flaring is the opposite, expanding the end. Coining is a process using a power press to flatten or “coin” wire or tubing, with tooling design determining the angles or shapes of the corners of a coined part. Coil winding can also be considered a wireforming process, though it is generally referring to electronic components.
