Cleanroom molding services, which take place in a controlled area with very low to no contaminants, are necessary for manufacturing most medical devices, since pollutants can compromise the safety of the device. Though cleanroom molding operations may not drastically differ from traditional molding operations, equipment is modified to add particle-containment systems, air filtration systems, and encapsulated lubrication of the moving parts. In a cleanroom, the level of contamination is specified by the number of particles per cubic meter at a specified particle size, so each cleanroom is given a different ISO rating reflecting its contamination control level. Different parts may be required to be manufactured in a certain class of cleanroom, and specialized or modified molding equipment compared to a standard operation machine can have a cleaner Class 6 rating over a Class 8 rating, for example. Cleanroom molding operators wear protective clothing and enter through airlocks, and as much of the cleanroom molding operations as possible are automated to eliminate potential human error or contamination.
