In the coinjection molding process for medical device manufacturing, two different materials are combined together in the same mold, allowing for different colors, textures, or grades of materials to be incorporated in the same part without the need of adhesives, assembly, or other secondary operations. Sometimes coinjection molding is necessary when the inner core needs to be stronger, or made from a less-expensive material than the functioning outer area, or sometimes the functionality of the part requires coinjection, such as an IV component that is rigid on one end and flexible on the other. Though there are advantages to coinjection molding, the design requirements are more advanced, and the equipment needs a second injection unit, which increases costs. However, completing a part in a single stage may still be less expensive than the assembly or associated secondary costs.
