Composites are materials used in medical device manufacturing that are composed of two or more distinct material types combined within a finished part, and composite molding molds parts together in a variety of processes to create strong, lightweight components. Compression molding, reaction injection molding, lay-up, spray-up, and resin transfer molding are just a few processes for molding composites for medical devices, and common materials for composite molding include vinyl ester, polyimide, polyester, epoxy, polypropylene, PEEK and phenolic bulk and sheet molding compounds. Composite molded parts are ideal in medical devices needing structural strength while remaining light in weight, or in instances where metallic structures could interfere with electronic components, such as device housing panels, leg supports, or radiolucent accessories.
