Compression molding services involve a heated male mold plunger pushing a specific amount of material in the form of granule, sheet, or preform into a heated female mold, and a certain amount of heat, time, and pressure is applied, allowing the part to cure into a medical device component. Compression molding is ideal for parts that are larger, flat, or slightly curved, and materials include composites, polyester fiberglass resin, PEEK, Torlon, or PPS. Advantages to compression molding for medical devices are the low cost, less fiber-length degradation than injection molding, and that the bulk or sheet molding compounds are sized appropriately to eliminate waste. Inserts are easily incorporated into this process, and secondary operations are required to trim flash from the parts.
