Insert molding services are often required when medical device manufacturers create a single part that encompasses a separate component, often made of metal, such as a plastic handle molded over a surgical blade or tool. In order to perform insert molding, the non-molded components must be inserted in the mold cavity between molding cycles, which requires an insert molding manufacturer to have complex automation equipment, such as robotic cells. High volume insert molding usually use a rotary insert molding press, but other injection molding machines, often vertical presses, can be used. Insert molding has advantages over adhesive bonding including reduced assembly, consistent strength, and no solvents or adhesives needed. Medical devices often use inserts such as needles, wires, electrical cables, catheters, or trocars.
