Liquid injection molding (LIM) is a process in which medical manufacturers mix and inject liquid plastic components into a mold, resulting in a hardened device component. Silicone and acrylic are the most common materials used in liquid injection molding for medical device manufacturing, due to their biocompatibility, flexibility, chemical and heat resistance, and ability to incorporate additives such as colors or fiber reinforcement. Two drums containing the base material and the catalyst use pumps and metering units to combine an exact ratio into a mixing unit, and the mixture is pressurized and injected into the mold with a spring-loaded nozzle. This special nozzle and mold clamps maintain pressure while preventing leakage of the liquid material. Since the material needs time to cure, the cycle time for liquid injection molding is longer than traditional plastic injection molding, but the completed parts, including gaskets, electronic contacts, seals, and o-rings, are very durable and widely used in the medical device industry.
