Metal injection molding (MIM) creates medical device components in a way similar to plastic injection molding, but the powdered metal is mixed with a binder material to create a feedstock that is injected into the mold, and the ejected part requires processes to remove the binder material to create the finished part. Metal injection molding allows medical device manufacturers to create intricate medical components with undercuts, threads, or other features not possible through traditional metal machining processes. The rheology, or flow path of the MIM feedstock, usually limits the size capability of the part to volumes under 100 grams, and to a single-cavity mold. After a part is ejected from the mold, binder materials are partially removed using solvents, furnaces, or a catalytic process, and then the resulting part must go through a sintering process to condense the part, taking out the resulting air space created by removing the binder materials. Sintering furnace temperatures are close to the heat required to melt the part entirely, and when the part comes out of the furnace, it has similar density and properties as metal parts created with machining processes. The parts can also undergo metal treatments such as nitriding, annealing, hardening, and plating.
