Resin molding uses natural or synthetic resins, which start out as a liquid that sets in the mold into a hard lacquer or enamel finish, to create a medical device component. Though casting and synthetic resins such as epoxy solidify in a similar way to some natural plant resins, they are liquid monomers of thermosetting plastics. Resin molding processes vary from basic resin casting in a silicone or epoxy mold, often used for custom orthopedic device manufacturing, to processes requiring machinery such as resin transfer molding. Resin molding can capture more details than processes like metal casting, and surface textures or threads can be included on the parts without the need of secondary operations. Resin transfer molding, similar to composite molding, places reinforcement material in the lower side of a rigid mold and closes the upper mold before introducing the resin, often incorporating processes like vacuum infusion.
