Rubber molding utilizes the strong yet pliant properties of rubber for medical devices by injecting a variety of synthetic rubber compounds into a mold, heating or vulcanizing the material, and ejecting the medical device component after the curing time. Rubberl’s long polymer chain structure is able to reconfigure to distribute stress, and when cured and crosslinked, the products are strong but still pliant. O rings, gaskets, seals, and other non-implantable medical components are commonly molded from rubber, and the class VI approved medical grades include silicone, fluorocarbons, and ethylene-propylene compounds, which offer different strengths and weakness for use in different medical applications. Silicone, a semi-organic elastomer, can withstand both high and low temperatures, but has low abrasion resistance and physical strength. Chemically-resistant fluorocarbon can handle high temperatures, but harden at negative temperatures. Ethylene-propylene compounds, which generally also involve a third monomer, offer excellent resistance to weather and chemicals, good heat resistance and flexibility, but have poor resistance to petroleum oil and solvents.
