Transfer molding creates parts for the medical device industry in a process in which preheated measured amounts of material, usually thermoset plastic, is plunged into a heated closed mold until the part cures or hardens and is ejected from the mold. Transfer molding generally has lower costs than injection molding, and unlike the similar compression molding process, no further pressure is applied to the mold, and the fully closed mold is capable of producing more intricate parts with tighter tolerances. Transfer molding is commonly used for electronic components, connectors, coils, and as package encapsulation in the semiconductor industry, due to the accuracy of the tooling and low cycle time. Transfer molds can be made from metal for higher volume production, or from composites, and since air can be trapped in the molds, processors need to properly vent the molds to prevent defects in the parts.
