Fluoropolymers, including fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), have seen wide use in medical tubing applications for device manufacturers due to these materials’ corrosion resistance and both high and low heat resistance, flexibility, and ability to be manufactured into a variety of shapes, sizes, and widths of tubing. FEP tubing is made from a melt processable thermoplastic that offers excellent clarity and can be sealed by heat or welded, unlike silicon or thermosets. The material is inert to chemicals and industrial solvents, capable of handling almost any corrosive chemical, and most grades are considered Class VI compliant, ideal for medical devices. FEP tubing can withstand continuous working temperatures of up to 400° F, and is self lubricating, without absorbing moisture. FEP tubing can be used as coiled tubing, heat-shrinkable tubing, and corrugated FEP tubes can turn sharp corners without reducing the inside diameter size.
