Nylon, also known as polyamide, is a tough, lightweight, corrosion- and abrasion-resistant polymer often selected for medical applications, and engineering-grade nylon tubing can be extruded by medical device manufacturers. The numbers attached to the grade name in nylon tubing refer to the numbers of carbons donated by the monomers, ranging from the more standard nylon 6 to nylon 12, a softer, more flexible product that may contain a plasticizer. Nylon tubing can withstand high pressures and temperatures with good mechanical and vibration resistance, making it ideal for many medical device applications, and nylon 6 may be safely implanted for short periods. Due to nylon tubing’s hydroscopic nature, it can absorb moisture leading to degradation, so nylon tubing can’t be used with strong acids, and processors must thoroughly dry the material to prevent hydrolysis.
