Polyethylene is a thermoplastic polymer that is considered to be the most widely used plastic, with widespread use in extruded tubing for the medical device manufacturing industry. Polyethylene tubing’s variety of density and branching of the chemical structure allows for several categories of PE including high density polyethylene (HDPE), medium density polyethylene (MDPE), and low density polyethylene (LDPE); linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE); cross-linked polyethylene (PEX or XLPE); and ultra high or ultra low molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE and ULMWPE). Generally speaking, the lower the density of polyethylene tubing, the lower the intermolecular forces, which results in a lower tensile strength and increased ductility ideal for many medical tubing applications. Polyethylene tubing has excellent resistance to chemicals, can be recycled, and the polyethylene itself can be made from alternative feedstocks including sugarcane, sugar beet, and wheat grain.
