Polyurethane (PU) is formed through step-growth polymerization, a reaction involving two monomers in the presence of a catalyst, and polyurethane tubing (PU tubing) for medical applications can be made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) compounds through the extrusion process by medical device manufacturers. Polyurethane tubing offers abrasion resistance, high tensile strength, and good flexibility at low temperatures, while being free of plasticizers, eliminating the risks of migration. Polyurethane tubing is also generally kink-resistant, and can stretch and flex, but will return to its original shape. Polyurethane is comprised of isocyanate and polyol, with two different polyol alcohols commonly used to cause similar yet different reactions in the isocyanate. This results in ether and ester-based PU classes, with the less-expensive ester-based resin handling oil slightly better but with quick degradation when introduced to water, and the ether-based resin handling water very well while handling oil slightly less well than ester.
