Medical tubing made from thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) offers a mix of the properties from thermoplastic and elastomeric materials, resulting in strong, flexible tubing that can be easily processed by medical manufacturers through extrusion. To qualify as thermoplastic elastomer tubing (TPE tubing), the material used must be capable of processing as a melt at an increased temperature, and return to its original shape after being stretched and elongated, without significant signs of deformation. In creating TPE tubing, an extra vulcanization step is required when working with rubbery thermoset elastomers to crosslink the chemical structure, but TPE polymers crosslink with hydrogen bonds during one of the material phases in normal processing. Unlike thermosetting rubbers, TPEs used in thermoplastic elastomer tubing can be recyclable, require less processing energy, and can easily be colored. Classes of TPE materials used in TPE tubing include styrenic block copolymers, elastomeric alloys, polyolefin blends, and thermoplastic copolyesters, polyamides, and polyurethanes.
