Nickel-Titanium intermetallic compounds. commonly known as Nitinol alioys. exhibit the phenomena of thermal shape memory as well as superelasticity. The forming of parts from Nitinol requires a good understanding of the underlying mechanisms. This paper explains the thermo-elastic martensitic transformation and describes thermo-mechanical procedures to optimize the properties. The peculiarities of forming parts from Nitinol are highlighted.
